Collaboration with Boris Grebenshikovmarch, 3 - may, 9 `03

Fisherman Songs (2003), album of Russian rock band Aquarium and Boris Grebenshikov, was a bright point of russian musical life of 2003. As Grebenshikov said, once — when he were at India — he realized what should be his next album: full of sincere, simple joy and without any groaning about the hardships of modern life.

This method needs for special sound. Boris Grebenshikov invited to record musicians from India, Ireland. There was a sitar, Celtic bagpipe. But one song — “Mist Over Yangtze” — required something… magical. Boris Grebenshikov tells:

“First, we tried to find a Chinese musicians, even went to Moscow, recording people who studied at the conservatory in China… But all it sounded unnatural. And to use samples we do not like. One day, our manager Zhenya Kolbashev said that there are people from Barnaul — Timofey Vinkovsky and Igor Sklyarov; brought their CD; we be contacted, they came in Leningrad and we recorded them during the day. It looks amazing: two racks, one where a twenty-five glasses filled with water… The water level creates a tone, and they touched the corners of glasses by his fingers. It looks like a magical ritual! And the sounds incredible.”
